Overnight Transformer Failure Cuts Power in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin
Thousands of residents in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood lost power overnight due to a transformer failure, according to ComEd.
The outage occurred near Diversey and Cicero Avenues, where a transformer reportedly "went bad," cutting electricity to homes during a night of high temperatures. With heat and humidity keeping temperatures above 80°F, many residents left their homes to escape the stifling indoor conditions. Some sought relief in their vehicles, while others went to public places or cooling centers.
ComEd confirmed that crews responded quickly to the scene and had restored power to affected customers by 5:30 a.m. Thursday.
The outage came as Chicago remains under a Heat Advisory, with air temperatures and humidity creating dangerous conditions, particularly overnight. City officials reminded residents that free public cooling centers are available across Chicago and Cook County, most opening at 9 a.m.
No injuries were reported, and ComEd has not yet released further details on the root cause of the transformer failure.
