Shell-Backed Battery Storage Project in Melbourne Unlocks 200 MW Capacity

6 Dec 2024
A consortium led by Eku Energy and Shell Energy has successfully completed the Rangebank Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Melbourne’s Rangebank Business Park, marking the second-largest battery storage project in Victoria. With a capacity of 200 MW and 400 MWh of storage, the facility can power up to 80,000 homes.

The project is pivotal in helping to stabilize Victoria’s electricity grid, offering vital support during peak demand periods. Eku Energy highlighted that this facility is its third global battery project, contributing to a growing portfolio of over 50 upcoming energy storage projects.

This project marks Shell Energy’s first direct equity investment in a utility-scale battery energy storage system worldwide. The system was developed in partnership with Fluence, a joint venture of AES and Siemens, which will also provide ongoing maintenance services.

The Rangebank BESS is fully committed under a 20-year offtake agreement with Shell Energy, reinforcing the company’s commitment to renewable energy integration. The project supports a more resilient energy system in Victoria, especially as the state faces growing demand driven by population growth.

AusNet played a key role in the completion of the connection works, ensuring the project stayed on time and within budget.
