DOE Backs Eos Energy with $303.5M Loan for Battery Innovation

6 Dec 2024
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a $303.5 million loan guarantee to Eos Energy Enterprises to fund the construction of two advanced battery production lines in Pennsylvania. The facilities will manufacture Eos Z3™ zinc-bromine battery energy storage systems, designed for utility and industrial-scale applications.

These batteries are capable of powering 130,000 homes annually and will help enhance grid resilience by providing long-duration energy storage. This project is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs, including unionized positions with the United Steelworkers, benefiting the local economy and the region’s clean energy workforce.

The Eos Z3 batteries offer significant advantages over traditional lithium-ion systems, including non-flammability, no need for active cooling, and the ability to discharge fully without degrading. These innovations position Eos as a key player in the growing energy storage market, which is expected to support increased renewable energy integration into the grid.

The loan guarantee is part of the Biden-Harris Administration's broader clean energy efforts and aligns with the DOE’s commitment to fostering domestic manufacturing, reducing reliance on critical minerals, and promoting sustainable jobs.

The project, located in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, will also support the region’s disadvantaged communities by creating diverse, high-quality job opportunities and contributing to local economic development.
