ScottishPower Secures $801M to Modernize UK Power Grid

16 May 2025
ScottishPower has secured $801 million (equivalent to £600 million) in funding from the UK’s National Wealth Fund (NWF) to accelerate vital upgrades to the country’s electricity transmission infrastructure.

The Iberdrola-owned energy utility will use the financing to deliver seven high-priority grid projects aimed at expanding renewable energy capacity, reducing constraint costs, lowering electricity prices for businesses and consumers, and driving economic growth through improved infrastructure.

The investment will support the development of the Eastern Green Link (EGL) projects 1 and 4 — large-scale subsea interconnectors designed to transport clean electricity from Scotland to North-East England and Norfolk, boosting the UK's ability to balance supply and demand with low-carbon energy.

Additional upgrades will take place at five key sites in Scotland, including the construction of new substations, overhead line reconfiguration, and enhancements to existing transmission cables to improve both capacity and grid resilience.

The move supports the UK’s broader transition to a net-zero energy system, helping ensure the transmission network can accommodate increased volumes of wind, solar, and battery-powered energy.
