Power Supply Worsens in Lagos, Nigeria Following Fire at Key Substation
A fire outbreak at the Egbin Power Plant, located in Ikorodu, a suburb in the eastern part of Lagos State, Nigeria, has intensified ongoing electricity disruptions in the region, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, and resulted in damage to a 150 megavolt-amperes (MVA) transformer at the Egbin Transmission Substation.
According to Ndidi Mbah, spokesperson for TCN, the fire originated from a 33kV instrument transformer (CT/VT) installed by Egbin Power Plc, which malfunctioned and ignited. The flames then spread, damaging TCN's main transformer and causing an oil leak due to a rupture in its tank.
As a result, power supply has been temporarily reduced to the Ikorodu and Odogunyan 132/33kV substations, which service customers in parts of Lagos and Ogun State via Ikeja Electric (IKEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). The disruption also affects Sagamu Line 1, Sagamu Line 2, and Maryland Line 2 on the 132kV transmission network.
Initially, a total load of 47MW was impacted and has since been diverted to a second 150MVA transformer within the substation, which is now operating under strain. Load shedding has increased in affected areas as a result.
TCN has initiated urgent plans to source a replacement transformer and has asked for public patience while efforts are made to restore full supply.
