ABB Powers Tata Steel’s £1.25B UK Steel Upgrade
ABB has been contracted to provide transformers, power distribution equipment, and its ArcSave® electromagnetic stirring system for Tata Steel UK’s £1.25 billion modernization of the Port Talbot steelworks.
The project involves replacing blast furnaces with a 320-ton electric arc furnace (EAF), aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions by 90% and support Tata Steel’s goal of fossil-free steel production by 2045. The upgrade, supported by £500 million in UK government funding, focuses on energy efficiency and decarbonization.
ABB’s scope includes supplying high- and low-voltage switchgear, power and distribution transformers, and a digital power distribution control system. The ArcSave® stirring technology, developed with Tenova, enhances EAF productivity, lowers energy consumption, and improves yield.
Commissioning is planned for 2027, ahead of the full operational start-up in 2028, strengthening ABB’s partnership with Tata Steel and Tenova in sustainable steelmaking.
