Met-Ed to Upgrade Easton Power Grid with New Substations
Met-Ed has announced a series of infrastructure improvements aimed at reducing frequent power outages across Easton, including the replacement of aging substations, upgrades to circuits, and a shift to energy-efficient streetlighting.
After several recent outages — including a substation explosion in May that cut service to over 1,300 homes — city leaders and utility officials have intensified efforts to resolve longstanding issues.
Frank Pintabone, Easton City Councilman, confirmed that Met-Ed has committed to capital projects through 2026. These include significant upgrades to the Glendon Substation, which serves a large portion of Easton. The project is expected to benefit about 14,400 customers.
Short-term efforts are also underway. Two remote control switches are being installed on Easton’s north side to help reroute electricity more quickly during outages. Additionally, a circuit breaker replacement is ongoing at a substation in South Side Easton, serving roughly 900 customers.
A new substation near Morgan Hill Road is replacing the one in the Highlands neighborhood to better serve about 500 residents.
Vegetation around power lines — a key contributor to outages — is being trimmed along over 400 miles of Easton-area lines.
In a broader initiative, Met-Ed plans to convert 85,000 traditional streetlights to energy-efficient LEDs across Pennsylvania, including those in Easton.
Sal Panto Jr., Easton’s mayor, and Pintabone have emphasized the need for continued communication and timely updates from the utility provider.
